ABOUT THE EXHIBITION In “Blues for Jim Crow,” experimental photographer, John K. Blair, explores how historic anti-black laws have evolved into policies that define the systemic racism of today. By layering contemporary photographic portraits over and through scenes documenting violence and terror against people of color, Blair voices a very palpable fear. Questioning the direction forward, Blair's kaleidoscopic compositions, remind one of a compass seeking a metaphorical North in today's social climate. Double images ask, How much progress have we really made? Blair prints on vintage Kodak paper, conjuring a frightening sense of déjà vu, where the past feels dangerously near. The Blues are a lament and while Blair’s images are sepia-toned, these photographs leave the heart cold, as communities of color anticipate the tacit implications of current events, policies and rhetoric. His photographic flashbacks also suggest how the history of racial oppression continues to have a psychological and multi-generational impact today. Many of these images are quite beautiful and all of them are powerful. However, some are brutal, and therefore may not be suitable for young children.
Photographer, JOHN K. BLAIR, is a St. Louis artist and contributing writer for All The Art, a visual arts quarterly magazine in St. Louis, MO. With a Doctorate of Ministry and Masters of Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, Blair is also a non-sectarian Buddhist priest. In addition, Blair graduated with Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. When not in his studio, you can find Blair in the classroom teaching English Composition and Psychology at area colleges. His openness to mystery and learning have brought him to this particular moment of art-making. Blair, started exhibiting his work in 2010 and has shown throughout the region.
